Carson / Dominguez Channel Contamination Lawsuit

Beginning in October 2021, residents of Carson, Wilmington, Long Beach, Torrance, and surrounding south Los Angeles County communities experienced overwhelming sulfur-like odors and severe health symptoms tied to massive releases of hydrogen sulfide and other gases from decaying organic material in the Dominguez Channel. The contamination was traced to a warehouse fire at the Virgin Scent / Day to Day Imports facility in Carson, which sent thousands of gallons of liquid soap, hand sanitizer, ethanol, and other organic chemicals flowing into the channel where they decomposed in standing water.

How the Disaster Unfolded

The September 30, 2021, warehouse fire deposited massive quantities of organic chemicals into the Dominguez Channel. As bacteria broke down the material in low-oxygen conditions, the resulting hydrogen sulfide emissions reached levels documented by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) as among the highest ever recorded in Southern California. Air monitoring stations recorded H2S concentrations many times above odor thresholds and well above health-effect thresholds for sustained periods.

Health Effects on Residents

Residents reported severe headaches, persistent nausea and vomiting, dizziness, eye and throat irritation, respiratory distress, asthma exacerbations, sleep disturbance, fatigue, anxiety, and cognitive symptoms. Hydrogen sulfide at the levels recorded is associated with neurological injury, respiratory disease, and long-term health consequences. Children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions were particularly impacted.

Loss of Use and Property Damage

Beyond personal injury, families were forced to relocate temporarily, install costly air filtration systems, replace HVAC filters, and abandon outdoor activities for weeks. Many businesses experienced lost revenue. The County of Los Angeles distributed temporary relief funds, but residents have continued to pursue civil claims for the full scope of their losses.

Who May Qualify

Anyone who lived, worked, or attended school in the impacted area — including Carson, Wilmington, Long Beach, Torrance, Compton, and surrounding communities — and who suffered health effects, property impacts, displacement costs, or emotional distress may bring a claim against the warehouse operator and other responsible parties.

Damages Available

Recovery may include medical expenses, the cost of air filtration and remediation, hotel and relocation expenses, lost wages, business losses, diminished property value, loss of use, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and punitive damages where conduct is shown to be reckless.
