Station Fire Lawsuit Overview

The Station Fire ignited on August 26, 2009, in the Angeles National Forest near the U.S. Forest Service ranger station for which it was named. Over the following weeks, the fire grew into the largest wildfire in modern Los Angeles County history, burning more than 160,000 acres, killing two firefighters, destroying nearly 100 structures, and forcing widespread evacuations across La Cañada Flintridge, Acton, Tujunga, Sunland, Altadena, and adjoining mountain communities.

Cause of the Fire

Federal investigators determined the fire was caused by arson. While the criminal case has remained difficult to fully resolve, civil claims focused on inadequate initial attack by the U.S. Forest Service, water-source failures, and related governmental and contractor liability theories. The Station Fire became the subject of extensive reporting on agency response and decisions made in the critical first hours of the fire.

Settlement and Resolution

Civil claims arising from the Station Fire have largely been resolved. Federal claims faced significant immunity defenses and limited recoveries. Insurance recoveries and individual settlements addressed many property losses.

Who May Still Have Claims

If you suffered Station Fire losses that were not previously addressed — including derivative claims, late-discovered injuries, or matters not pursued at the time — our firm can evaluate whether any avenues for recovery remain available subject to applicable statutes of limitations and immunity doctrines.

Damages Available Historically

Historical recoveries addressed reconstruction and repair costs, personal property replacement, displacement, loss of use, smoke and ash damage, and personal injury. Wrongful death claims for the two firefighters killed proceeded through separate channels.
