Woolsey Fire Lawsuit Overview
The Woolsey Fire ignited on November 8, 2018, at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory site near Simi Valley and burned through Ventura and Los Angeles Counties — including Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Bell Canyon, Malibu, and surrounding communities. The fire burned more than 96,000 acres, destroyed nearly 1,650 structures, killed three people, and forced the evacuation of approximately 295,000 residents.
Cause of the Fire
Cal Fire investigators determined that the Woolsey Fire was caused by Southern California Edison electrical equipment near the Big Rock substation at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory site. SCE acknowledged that its equipment was involved and faced extensive litigation alleging that the utility failed to de-energize lines during red flag conditions, neglected vegetation management, and failed to harden its grid. The fire's origin at the contaminated SSFL site raised additional concerns about resuspension of radionuclides and toxic chemicals into the smoke plume.
Settlement and Resolution
SCE reached a series of settlements with Woolsey Fire victims totaling several billion dollars. Settlements addressed property damage, personal property replacement, displacement, lost income, smoke and ash damage, personal injury, and wrongful death. Most claims have resolved, though limited late-filed and individual matters may still be pending.
Who May Still Have Claims
If you suffered Woolsey Fire losses that were not previously addressed, or if you have derivative or late-discovered claims (including SSFL exposure-related conditions), our firm can evaluate whether any avenues for recovery remain available subject to applicable statutes of limitations.
Damages Recovered
Recovery addressed reconstruction and repair costs, replacement of personal property and irreplaceable items, additional living expenses, loss of use, smoke and ash remediation, debris removal, lost wages and lost business income, emotional distress and pain and suffering, and wrongful death damages for surviving family members.
